Winter Tales
14 DÉCEMBRE | MAISON SYMPHONIQUE, MONTRÉAL, QUÉBEC, CANADA
Tchaïkovski – Chostakovitch – J. Strauss fils – Josef Strauss – Humperdinck
Sparkling white landscapes, cheeks reddened by the cold, eyes filled with wonder and the smell of gingerbread men are all part of winter tales, as is this concert performed by Christoph Campestrini on the podium and Serhiy Salov at the piano. The suite from Tchaikovsky’s The Sleeping Beauty opens the ball with delightful dances we have associated with the story since we were tots. The tone is set for Shostakovich’s PianoConcerto No. 2, used as the soundtrack for Andersen’s “The Steadfast Tin Soldier” in Fantasia 2000. Dances by Strauss father and son lead gaily into the adventures of Hansel and Gretel composed by Humperdinck.

Although they come from different musical cultures, the three works on the program have one thing in common. Whether it is a Sonata composed by an Italian by birth and training, an Italian Concerto which owes everything to the genre fixed by Vivaldi, or a suite taken from an extremely popular ballet, which, as we know, is played at Verona, they are all closely associated with beautiful Italy.

From the first light to the decline of romanticism
Franz Schubert
Quintet in A major, opus 114, D.667, known as “The Trout”
Nikolaï Medtner
Concerto for piano nº 1 in ut minor, op.33
The composers Franz Schubert (1797-1828) and Nikolaï Medtner (1880-1951) are both at the two extremes of romanticism. If one reminds us of the end of classicism, the second announces modernism, but both offer us works where emotions exalt and where the piano occupies a preponderant place.
